Abstracts Guidelines

The VIII IASSCS Conference offers three options for abstract submission:

  • Proposal for sessions
  • Proposal for individual paper presentations
  • Proposal for exhibit presentations

To help you with your abstract submission, the following general guidelines have been outlined:

  • All abstracts can be submitted in English and Spanish (see below for detailed information).
  • Abstracts can only be submitted online; those by fax, post or e-mail will not be considered.
  • The abstract text should not exceed 300 words.
  • Tables and graphs may not be included.
  • It is the author’s responsibility to submit a correct abstract. Any errors in spelling, grammar or scientific fact will be reproduced as typed by the author.
  • Fields which are marked with a star (*) in the online form are mandatory.
  • Each presenting author may present a maximum of two abstracts at the Conference.
  • Abstracts must not have been published or submitted for presentation to any other national or international meeting.
  • Inclusion of gender breakdown of data is strongly encouraged as well as a comprehensive gender analysis in the results section should be provided whenever possible.
  • There will be one afternoon for bilingual presentations. We encourage those who can only present their papers in Spanish, to apply for these sessions. However, it is important to emphasize that the selection for these sessions is limited in space (a maximum of 60 abstracts will be accepted). Participants applying for these sessions won’t be able to participate in the selection for the other Conference sessions.

If you have any question regarding your abstract submission, please contact:

Types of proposals submission

We invite the submission of abstracts and proposals for the following:

1. Sessions Proposal Guidelines:

Sessions consist on the presentation and discussion of papers prepared specifically for the Conference. Proposals should include a minimum of three (3) and a maximum of five (5) people (4 papers and 1 discussant). The Program Committee has the prerogative to add panelists to any session with fewer than five presenters. At the panels, papers should be summarized, only to provide adequate opportunity for discussion and audience participation.

General Instructions for all papers presented in sessions:

  • Indicate clearly the main theme for which the session should be considered.
  • Session organizers must list participants in the expected order of appearance.
  • All addresses must be current and complete. Incomplete proposals will not be accepted. If the Secretariat is not notified of address changes, it is not responsible for missing correspondence.

Responsibilities of Session Organizers and Session Chairs:

  • Obtain the approval of anyone you are proposing as a participant. This is imperative.
  • Submit your abstract online through the Abstract Submission Form by January 10th, 2011.
  • Once a session is approved, notify all participants to make sure they know the session is approved.
  • Be a 2011 IASSCS member yourself and urge membership of all your panelists.
  • Report any changes in your sessions to IASSCS Conference Program Office (2011conference@iasscs.org) no later than January 10th, 2011.
  • Only one main author per session can apply for a scholarship. Co-authors will not be able to apply for scholarships. If a main author is requesting travel funds, submit the applicant’s one-page Curriculum Vitae, along with the session proposal.

2. Paper presentation Guidelines:

Paper presentations will take place during the Parallel Sessions. Accepted abstracts will be placed into sessions with 3-4 other papers on similar topics.

General Instructions for individual papers:

  • Indicate clearly the theme for which the paper should be considered.
  • Submit your abstract online through the Abstract Submission Form by January 10th, 2011.
  • Once an abstract is approved, it is your responsibility to notify all co-authors.
  • All addresses must be current and complete. Incomplete proposals will not be accepted. If the Secretariat is not notified of address changes, it is not responsible for missing correspondence.

3. Exhibit presentation Guidelines:

We also encourage participants who prefer to present their work on a different format, to submit their abstracts under the exhibit section. The exhibits will present research results and/or analytical reflections based on activist or mobilizing experiences previously conducted. They would require the submission of an abstract as the other formats do, and will be peered-reviewed by a small curatorial committee formed by artists, scholars and activists with experience working in the arts or cultural activism.

Posters will also be considered under this section. Exhibit presentations will cover the variety of Conference themes. Depending on space available, all posters will be displayed during the whole Conference or a different group of posters will be displayed each day. Presenters will be at their posters between a pre-established time to answer questions and provide further information on their study results.

General Instructions for exhibit presentation:

  • Provide exhibit titles in English. Exhibitions will be in English.
  • Indicate clearly the theme for which the exhibit should be considered.
  • All addresses must be current and complete. Incomplete proposals will not be accepted. If the Secretariat is not notified of address changes, it is not responsible for missing correspondence.

Responsibilities of Exhibition Presenters:

  • Participants should bring their posters and other material to the Conference on the assigned exhibition day, and place them on the panels according to the code assigned. At the end of the day they should be removed by the participants.
  • In case it is not possible for you to attend the Conference but you still want to display an exhibit, it should be sent with somebody else coming to the Conference and this person will be in charge of placing and removing it.
  • Unfortunately, given the number of posters and other materials displayed, the Conference cannot save them and return them to the authors once they are removed.

Choosing Abstract Themes and Structure Categories

The abstract theme category is the general heading under which your abstract will be reviewed and included in a session, if selected. Please choose the category which best describes the subject of your abstract.

Themes to be addressed in Madrid Conference include (but are not limited to):

  • Gender, feminism(s) and the struggle for sexual equality.
  • HIV/AIDS and sexual inequality.
  • Beyond heterosexuality: LGBTQI challenging and reproducing sexual hegemonies.

  • Non-normative bodies as a sexual battleground.
  • Development work and the reproduction of sexual inequality.
  • Sexual tourism: tensions between development and cultural colonization.
  • Pleasure, desire and sexual (in)equality.

  • Lessons learned: conclusions and implications of the research or project.
  • Next steps: possible next steps for implementation or further research.

IASSCS Conference Profile

Before you can submit an abstract, you need to create a Conference profile from which you can access the abstract submission online system. You can submit one or two abstracts from your Conference profile. Once submitted no modifications can be made to the abstract.

Peer-review Selection Process

All abstracts submitted to the Conference will go through a blind, peer-reviewed process carried out by an international review panel. Each abstract will be reviewed by no fewer than three reviewers and the final selection of abstracts will be done by members of the Academic Program.

Successful abstracts will be included as oral or poster presentations in the Conference program.

Notification of Acceptance or Rejection

Notification of acceptance will be sent to the corresponding author by the end of March 2011. Please note that only the corresponding author will receive mail concerning the abstract and is responsible for informing all co-authors of the status of the abstract. Authors whose abstracts have been accepted will receive instructions for the presentation of their paper.

Your abstract, if accepted, will appear in its full form, on the abstract CD-ROM and on the Conference and IASSCS websites. In addition, all delegates will receive a final program which will contain the Conference program and a list of all oral and poster abstract presentations.
