This initiative offers mentoring and technical assistance to early career sexuality researchers from the global south in order to maximize their opportunities to share their research in the form of articles submitted to peer-review research journals. Development and pilot of the program were funded by Ford Foundation and HIVOS.
The mentoring process takes place on two distinct levels:
1. Specific technical support to authors regarding the conceptual and methodological issues addressed in their papers. This technical support seeks to strengthen the academic quality of the papers and increase the likelihood that the papers will be accepted for local, regional or international publication. Mentors versed in the language of the author of each paper will be matched, given their availability.
2. Assistance from experienced writers/editors who will provide non-native English speaking researchers/authors feedback regarding the quality of the grammatical, syntax and translation to English of the papers prior to submission. Drafts will be received in English
The 1st program was pilot in 2010. A total of 20 abstracts were received by the deadline; following their review, the members of this committee selected 8 based on the quality of the paper and the availability of mentors.
Initiative’s goals are to:
bring newcomers and more experienced researchers together,
expand research networks,
improve the capacity to produce knowledge in the Global South,
increase the production and dissemination of research and advocacy work from the Global South.
The 2nd edition of the IASSCS Publication Mentoring Program begins September 2011.
