June 2010 - IASSCS Publication Mentoring Program

IASSCS is pleased to announce the IASSCS Publication Mentoring Program, which offers an opportunity for junior researchers and/or activists from the South to receive mentoring and technical assistance with specific/small projects.

This program has been developed as part of the IASSCS objective of bringing newcomers and more experienced researchers together to expand advocacy and research networks, improve the capabilities to produce knowledge in the South, and increase the production and dissemination of research and advocacy work from the South.

This program offers assistance in 2 categories:

1. Abstract review pre-submission – IASSCS Conference: to provide an opportunity for young and/or less experienced abstract submitters to receive feedback from more experienced researchers. This program is especially targeted at researchers from resource-limited settings who lack access to opportunities for mentoring in research and writing, for whom online distance education provides a cost-effective research capacity building. By providing this opportunity, we also expect to increase the number of abstract submissions among early-career researchers at the IASSCS 2011 Conference. We will assign you abstracts (up to 3) that match best with your expertise and areas of interest.

2. Paper review pre-submission, which includes 2 sub-categories:

a. Conceptual-Methodological: to provide technical support regarding conceptual and methodological issues in the publication of research results. This mentoring seeks to strengthen the quality of academic papers and their likelihood of being accepted for local, regional or international publication. Papers to be considered include papers written in English, Spanish, French, and other languages depending on the availability of mentors.

b. Editorial: We recognize the difficulties faced by researchers whose first language is not English in getting their work published in English. These difficulties, rather than technological or methodological, arise from translating into English work that was originally written in the researchers’ first language. Therefore, this mentoring seeks to provide editing support from experienced writers in order to improve language quality before submitting papers for English publication.

For both categories the IASSCS Publication Mentoring Program coordinator will facilitate the process by matching mentors with abstracts/papers according to sub-categories selected, topics and common areas of interest.
